What is the day of the year?
The "day of the year" (also called the Julian day number or ordinal date) is a number from 1 to 365 (or 366 in a leap year) that counts days since January 1 of the same year. January 1 is day 1, February 1 is day 32, and December 31 is day 365 or 366. This notation is commonly used in astronomy, agriculture, military logistics, and meteorology.
What is a leap year?
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years (divisible by 100) which must also be divisible by 400 to be a leap year. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. Leap years add February 29, making the year 366 days long.
